A Sinking Ship...

God often speaks to me by comparing very practical things in life to things we go through in life. And today He was showing me how our life is like a ship or boat. But the analogy He was showing me today is that to many of us are traveling through life on a sinking ship.....and we are ignoring it. By that I mean that our ship is taking on water and instead of doing what it takes to repair it and get it running smoothly again, we are just take buckets and trying to remove the water. Doing what we have to do to keep it afloat, but never fixing the problem. Of course the picture I am trying to paint for you is the fact that our life is the ship and all the trouble and sin that we allow into it is the water that we are taking on. The problem is, we are just learning how to live with the trouble and sin in our lives instead of doing what it takes to make it stop.
If you were on a boat that was taking on water you would have 3 choices really. One choice would be to keep a bucket close by and just keep filling it with water and throwing it overboard. When you choice this method you are going to be always be working to stay afloat, you are constantly going to be working around the problem and you ARE going to be exhausted. One reason you may choice this method is because you don't want to admit the problem is really as big as it is, and you think you can just "mange it".
Choice two would be the just give up and let the boat sink. Unfortunately so many people make this choice. All the areas where God used to be such an important part of their life they have let other things take over and over time have just completely lost their relationship with Him. Sin, heartache, trouble....whatever, has taken over your life and because you have become exhausted trying to "keep the ship afloat", and you just give up. Just like there isn't a ship out there that was ever meant to sink, there also isn't a life out there that was ever meant to fall apart. The choice to "let it sink" comes from ignoring the problem(s) for too long, and now they just seem to big to deal with. But nothing is to big for God....nothing!
Choice three is to figure out why your ship is taking on water and fix it! This choice takes you opening your eyes to the fact that there really is a problem.....then saying "I must do something about this before it's too late". This means you are going to have evaluate things. You are going to have to go looking for issues in your life. You are going to have to admit there are problems. And you are going to have deal with them! Some "holes" in your ship will just need a patch, but some things will need a major repair. The important part is that you are not letting them take you down. And the best way to deal with this is to know "The Maker" of your ship. Know that God is creator of your life and He knows better than anyone how He designed your life to be. Yes you may have let some things bang up your ship over time, but it is never to get it fixed before you become exhausted or just give up. No matter what lies the enemy has told you, nothing is to big to fix, and you were not designed to be a sinking ship.
All of us are traveling through life on our own ship. People and things are going to come aboard yours and exit yours as they come in and out of your life. But I can promise you that as long as you choose to be the one who steers your ship, it is going to need repaired again and again and again. However, when you let God steer your ship....or direct your life....it will not get steered in the wrong direction. The waters you travel in will be safer, the things you come up against will not harm you and the things you allow to come aboard will be good, not harmful. I hear people use the excuse that "we only get one life" to justify all kinds of their bad choices. But I also believe we only get one life, so why not make the best of it and lead as many people to Christ through your life as you can. And one of the best ways you can do that is to let someone see restoration in your life. Let others know that you were on a sinking ship, but you gave up on trying to manually keep it afloat and you just let God fix it!
He restores, He can make all things new, He can bring you peace, He can fix what seems unfixable and He can use your life to reach the lives of others. But you must humble yourself and admit to Him that you NEED Him...or you need more of Him. No matter how good or bad your life looks, the need for Him doesn't change. We all need Him!
God, grant us the wisdom to see our need for You in our lives. Help us to recognize the things that want to sink us and give us the strength to steer clear of those things. If we have let things into our lives that we shouldn't have, give us eyes to see the damage they are causing and help us remove them from our lives. Help us to humble ourselves before You and let You take over steering our lives in the direction that You want us to go in...even when it goes against our own fleshly desires. In Jesus name, Amen.
