Running "Your" Race...

Have you ever noticed that race horses and pull horses wear blinders that cover part of their vision. The purpose of these blinders are to stop the horse from seeing everything that is going on around it while it is doing what it is supposed to be doing. You see horses eyes are placed near the sides of their heads which gives them peripheral vision, which also means they can end up running off course unless they are forced to remain focused on what is ahead of them.
This morning during my prayer time God was showing me that even though our eyes are not set like a horse, we too have the problem of staying focused on what lies ahead of us from God. We can become very distracted on all the things going on around and start to focus on the wrong things if we're not careful. And by wrong things, I don't even mean sinful things. I just simply mean not the things God desires for us to be focused on.
There is a story about a preacher who wanted to prove that his horse could walk up the steps in his home, even though nobody thought it could be done. The preacher led the horse to the steps and was indeed able to get the horse to walk up the steps with no problem. However, when he turned the horse around and began to lead it down the steps the horse didn't want to go. The horse froze and wouldn't budge. So the preacher got the idea to cover the horse's head and lead him down that way. When the horse's head was covered the preacher was able to lead the horse down the steps with no problems. He realized that by covering the horses head, or at least part of his eyes, he could get the horse to take chances that it would not normally take.
Doesn't this sound just like us sometimes. God will call us to a certain place in life, or to do something that we have never done before, and instead of stepping out in faith with God, we begin to look around at all the things that could go wrong or look for reasons to not do it. The important part of that story about the preacher is that once the horse's head was covered it did not just walk down the steps on it's own....the man led it down the steps. The horse trusted enough to be led! God does not want us to close our eyes and just walk through life. That would be foolish! But what He does want us to do is close our eyes to all the things that the enemy wants to distract us with...including doubts, fears, insecurities and lack of faith.....and and trust Him by letting Him lead us where He needs us to go. He has a "race" set out for each of us. Yours is not the same as the person beside you and the worst thing you can do is pay so much attention to theirs that you lose focus on what God has for you. Your pace may be different, your path may be different and the work He has called you to do may be different. So don't feel as though you have mimic the lifestyle of another Christian..."close your eyes", get in your secret place with God, remove all distractions and find out what God has for you. Then let Him lead you where He wants to take you. He will NEVER steer you wrong....He is trustworthy, faithful and true!
God, help us put on spiritual blinders. Help us to not get caught up in the race of others or the distractions of life going on around us and lose focus on what You have called us to do. Help us have complete trust in you so we can close our eyes and be led by You. Your word says in John 13 that you have given us the Holy Spirit to lead us on Your behalf....so may we be led by the Spirit to bring honor and glory to Your name. In Jesus name, Amen.
